For most systems, maintenance is recommended but not required. A maintenance requirement may apply only to air conditioning and heat pump systems, typically for larger systems above a certain capacity or refrigerant charge.
A heat pump operates using a refrigeration circuit and is therefore subject to F-gas regulations. If the refrigerant charge exceeds 3 kg, you are required to maintain a logbook, and for larger systems (more than 5 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent), periodic leak testing is mandatory.
For comfort cooling systems with a total cooling capacity of more than 12 kW at the building level, an energy inspection is required by law. All units in the same building are counted together for this purpose. The initial inspection must be conducted within 12 months of the system being put into service, followed by periodic inspections.
