ETS2 Requirements for Belgian Companies

CO2
Starting in 2025, Belgian companies will be subject to ETS2. Find out what these new CO₂ requirements mean and how to prepare your business for them.

In this article:

Starting in 2027, the new European Emissions Trading System (ETS2) will take effect. Under this system, anyone who uses natural gas, diesel, or heating oil will now have to pay for the associated CO₂ emissions. Depending on energy consumption, the additional annual costs could amount to thousands of euros. ETS2 is no longer an abstract or future policy, but a concrete reality that you’d be wise to prepare for now. Companies that fail to make their energy consumption more sustainable risk financial penalties. At the same time, the system encourages an accelerated transition to electric and renewable alternatives—something we strongly encourage at EnergyKing.

The Impact of ETS2

ETS2 aims to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels. Emission allowances will become scarce and therefore more expensive, and suppliers will pass those costs on to their business customers. For SMEs, logistics companies, agricultural businesses, and other enterprises, this means structural additional costs for heating, transportation, and production.

Unlike large industries that have been subject to ETS1 for years, many companies are now facing emissions charges for the first time. An impact analysis by Arcadis therefore refers to ETS2 as a “game-changer for those still relying on fossil fuels.” Since Europe wants to protect its industry, a price cap of 45 euros per metric ton of CO₂, or the equivalent of 8 cents per cubic meter of gas, will be implemented. However, this price cap will be indexed annually and will remain in effect until 2030.

Solution: Reduce Costs and Avoid Emissions

The best way to avoid ETS2 costs? Phase out fossil fuels and switch to renewable electricity. EnergyKing helps companies do just that with an integrated approach:

  • Heat Pumps for Commercial Buildings: Gas-fired boilers are being replaced by electric heat pumps. These are exempt from ETS2 levies and can be integrated with solar energy. This applies to office environments as well as logistics and manufacturing facilities.
  • Solar panels and industrial battery systems: Generate your own green energy and avoid peak consumption during expensive times. Smart batteries help reduce the load on the grid and optimize costs.
  • Charging Infrastructure for Electric Fleets: Companies with multiple electric vehicles benefit in two ways: they save on fuel and avoid paying additional CO₂ taxes. Combine that with your own solar panels and charge when electricity is cheapest.

EnergyKing offers comprehensive solutions for companies that want to become more sustainable quickly and efficiently: from feasibility studies and assistance with grants to installation, maintenance, and inspection. Together, we’ll analyze your energy profile and develop a concrete step-by-step plan tailored to your business model and growth ambitions. 2027 may seem far off, but it’s wise to future-proof your business now. Feel free to contact EnergyKing—we’ll help you get started on your journey to CO₂-free energy.
