Ventilation = Health

Why is ventilation so important? The air in your home gets contaminated in all sorts of ways. Just think of unpleasant odors, pollen, fine particulate matter, and so on. That might not sound very fresh—and it isn’t.

Did you know that? 💡Ventilation is an important part of the EPB requirements. EPB stands for Energy Performance and Indoor Climate. All buildings that are constructed or renovated under a permit must meet these requirements.

Types of Ventilation Systems

In addition to standard ventilation grilles, there are also ventilation systems C and D. A D system is recommended, especially for large spaces or areas with many people or animals. Want to compare them?

Renovating? Make sure to ventilate!

Ventilation is extremely important during a renovation. What’s more, for renovations that require a permit, a ventilation system is mandatory. Systems C and D are the most common in such cases.

For “standard” renovations, a ventilation system isn’t required, but it’s often an excellent opportunity to take a closer look at your indoor climate.

What about ventilation in new construction?

For new construction, there’s no question about it: a ventilation system is required. Here, too, the C and D systems are the most popular.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ventilation

What happens if I don't ventilate?

Mold & moisture problems, an ideal environment for dust mites, excessive levels of harmful and fine particulate matter in the home, allergic reactions & unpleasant odors.

Ventilation and airing out are not the same thing. Opening the windows and doors—for example, after cleaning—is airing out. But that’s not enough. Ventilation ensures a continuous inflow of fresh air and the removal of contaminated air. Airing out is a brief action; ventilation is a continuous process.

Do you have a Type C or D ventilation system? If so, maintenance is an important consideration. You can easily clean the valves and openings of the supply and exhaust ducts yourself. Vacuuming and replacing the filters is also a simple task. It’s best to have a professional perform the remaining maintenance work every two or three years.

Ventilation systems are required for new construction projects. Are you planning a renovation? If so, it’s highly recommended that you take a close look at your ventilation system, but it’s not always required. When is it required? If you’re replacing windows or doors in dry areas such as living rooms and bedrooms, ventilation grilles are required.

Since 2024, ventilation has also been included in the EPC, and checks are made to ensure that sufficient ventilation provisions are in place.

Ventilation in the bathroom is very important. If you don’t ventilate it, you risk developing mold and other moisture-related problems. Bathroom fans provide basic ventilation, but for proper ventilation, it’s best to use Ventilation System D.

You might not think so, but that’s exactly when it’s especially important! Ventilating is a good idea even when it’s raining or during the winter. That way, you keep the air healthy and prevent mold growth.
