Energy prices up 112% in last 10 years!

It will probably come as no surprise to you that energy prices are rising and will continue to rise. Flemings are noticing that energy has become a lot more expensive. Regulator CREG has now finally confirmed this as well: the prices of electricity rose by some 112% per Flemish family from 2007 to 2016! On average, this represents a price increase of 561.91 euros per year, which has a huge impact on the household budget of the Flemish person.

Is it really the pure electricity price? No, the biggest reason for this price increase is distribution network tariffs. These tariffs rose by an average of 152% for Flemish households. In addition, public levies also climbed sharply. The price of energy rose by 30%, the transmission tariff by 46%.

Interestingly, electricity bills have also risen in Wallonia and Brussels, but much less sharply than in Flanders as a whole. The rate of increase here is around 40 and 20%. There is even a decrease in the electricity price for both regions: as much as over 5%! Regulator CREG concludes that one of the reasons for this is the abolition of the free electricity we had in Flanders for a while.

For your information, between 2007 and 2016, the cost of natural gas for Flemish households did drop. On average, bills fell by 57.15 euros, a price drop of 5.09 percent.
